Karshika Mela is an interesting Agricultural fest that has been conducted by the agricultural department of Kerala in order to promote agriculture and agricultural products. Even though the first Karshika Mela was conducted in 1989 at Kottayam, later on, almost all Karshika Mela is conducted at Thodupuzha. Today Karshika Mela is attracting a large crowd from different places. Many tourists and travelers are also showing special interest in participating in this great agricultural fest.
Karshika Mela is conducted usually once in a year in the month of December. This largest agricultural festival in Kerala is not only conducted to promote agricultural products. It also gives valuable information to the farmers about new agricultural products, crops and so on. In all the seminars during the Melas, experts in the relevant fields actively participated and presented papers. Variety of classes and seminars are arranged along with this fest. People can purchase many necessary agricultural items and other stationary items from this fest. This Karshika Mela is also a good entertainment fest too.
Many specially produced agricultural items such as Coconut, Areca nut, Nutmeg, Ginger, Turmeric, Bananas, Coco, Tapioca, Pine-apple, Paddy, Pepper, Bananas, Jackfruits and so on. Kashika Mela is a very good example for the agricultural activities that are promoted by government and various organizations such as Gandhi Study Center. The ‘Krishibhavan’, (Agricultural office) provides the seeds and guidelines for farming. Several banks in corporation with Government and agricultural office provide essential financial support to the poor farmers.
The farmers got opportunity for presenting their attainments in farming through Karshika Mela. Variety of exhibitions such as Ox exhibition, Dog exhibition, Aquarium show, Goat exhibition and so on will also be conducted in relation with the show. These Karshika Melas (Agriculture fairs) have made tremendous impacts on the farming sectors of Kerala.
